3 Skincare Products to Protect Against Blue Light Damage

Unfortunately for a lot of us, the light that's emitting from our phone and laptop screens is more damaging than you’d think. We’re already aware of the ways UV rays affect our skin, but I’m sure a lot of us don’t think about how just simply scrolling through Instagram is affecting it too. Blue light is known for throwing off our sleep cycles and contributing to eye strain, but just how much is it impacting our skin?

It’s been linked to some serious skin damage, including inflammation, premature skin ageing, hyperpigmentation and weakening the skin’s surface. So what actually is blue light?

Blue light, also known as high energy visible light (HEV), is part of the visible light spectrum and emits a high amount of energy. It is one of the shortest, highest-energy wavelengths on the spectrum, and accounts for almost all visible light.

With all this in mind, there are products available to help protect the skin. With more and more brands starting to create products catered towards blue light damage, it won’t be long before blue light defence products are a staple in your daily routine. Here are 3 of the best, with a choice for all budgets.

Niod Survival O (£17.25)

This thin, lightweight serum creates a layer that protects your skin from environmental and blue light damage. Niods ‘Survival’ range contains defence systems to combat pollution, smog, infrared, sugar-induced ageing and blue light. This serum is ideal for nighttime use as it doesn’t contain SPF, however, you can still use it during the day as long as you apply SPF afterwards. The serums ingredient list boasts superoxide dismutase, an antioxidant that has been shown to reduce inflammation, dimethyl methoxy chromanol, an antioxidant effective in targeting pollution, and fractionated melanin used to protect against blue light.

BareMinerals Complexion Rescue Defense Radiant Tint Protective Moisturiser (£35.00)

This sheer gel-cream gives you the benefits of both a BB and CC cream, giving you hydration and radiance. Its vegan, natural formula combined with mineral electrolytes nourish and enhance your skin’s natural beauty. The cream includes SPF 30 to protects against UV rays, sugar molecules to block pollution particles and cacao extract to protect against blue light.

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream Light (£75)

Charlotte Tilbury’s iconic magic cream is now available in a light version! This lightweight moisturiser improves the appearance of your skin, making it brighter, plumper and smoother. The moisturiser is formulated to provide triple protection from pollution, UV rays and blue light. It features Radicare Gold, to help protect skin against blue light, SPF 20 to protect from UV rays, and Citystem to neutralise skin aggressors and provide pollution defence.
